Installments 26-29, Preview

Here we are, up to Installment 29– over 1/5th of the way into the installments already. Last time, I noted the unending flow of packets with nothing but planks… this is a big model, and it needs them! Here we have what appears to be the last of the first layer of planks, with Installments 26-28. The instructions from #28 show the entire hull finally covered with this first layer of planks.

It does not seem that DeAgostini expects us to practice “proper” planking in this layer, although I’m sure one could do so for practice, if one is so inclined. The images show the simplest form of plank fitting– no spiling or shaping of planks, other than with pointy ends to fill the various pointy gaps that develop with this sort of planking. I’m sure we’ll have the chance to work on proper spiling with  stealers and dropped planks when we get to the outer layer… can’t wait!

We also see that the aft castle isn’t quite finished yet, as Installment 29 includes a few more laser cut pieces for said structure, along with one more cannon.

A simple planking method is used for the first layer, which is little more than an armature for the final planking layer.

As always, find more information about this kit in the UK at the DeAgostini site. In the US and Canada, watch the local DeAgostini-USA site. Still no word about when Sovereign of the Seas will be available in North America, but I was told that it could happen by Summer 2013.
